Power Failure – Wade Wins Premier League Darts

James WadeThe PDC’s Premier League Darts has become the competition that boasts arguably the best players in the world. In its brief five-year existence, the cream of the darts world have battled for this coveted title. The 2009 season has been the most closely fought and, without a doubt, one of the most entertaining.

Last night the Premier League Darts playoffs were held at Wembly Arena, and it was a belter that saw Phil “The Power” Taylor’s four-year domination of the competition come to an end, and James Wade become the second player to get his name on the trophy.

The first semi-final of the evening was played out between James Wade, who finished second in the league, and Raymond van Barneveld, who came in third. Barney was in top form in this close battle and produced a number of big hundred-plus finishes that would unsettle most other opponents. Wade, however, was unshaken and on top of his game, and manged to secure a spot in the finals, winning
10 – 8.

With less confidence than usual, Taylor looked unconvincing in his semi-final against Mervyn King and paid the price. King, who made his debut in the Premier League this year, took the semi-final 10 – 6, and with it produced the biggest upset of the season. The crowd was less than receptive to King’s victory, and the hail of jeers and boos prompted a little outburst in his post match interview.

Whether King was heady from his victory over Taylor or he let the crowd get to him, we cannot be sure, but he looked weak going into the final with Wade taking seven straight legs. A massive finish of 156 finally got King into the game, and he took seven of the next nine legs. Although King managed to crawl his way back into the game, the early damage Wade inflicted on him took its toll. James Wade was a man in top form and throwing magic darts, he took the finals, 13-8. A deserved winner!

Last night was a great night of darts with four of the best players who all deserved to be there and a perfect way to end a fantastic season. Personally, I was hoping for a Taylor – Wade final, but you knew that Taylor would have to slip at some point in his career.
